A male Dakota skipper photographed at the @MNZoo. This once thriving butterfly species has spiraled into a steep decline due to dwindling prairie habitats after conversion of land to agricultural sites and the overuse of herbicides. Currently, this species is listed under the U.S. Endangered Species Act and is completely dependent on the survival of its prairie habitat. Thankfully, in 2013, the @MNZoo began a breeding program for the species that involved collecting female butterflies and then releasing them after 48 hours. The eggs that were laid were then brought back and raised at the zoo. This summer, they will be conducting the first-ever reintroduction of the Dakota skipper in hopes of better protecting and understanding this important species. . . #dakotaskipper #butterflies #nature #endangeredspecies #prairie #nature #wildlife #conservation #animalconservation #wildlifeconservation #naturephotography #wildlifephotography #photoark #natgeo #savetogether

Video by @joelsartore #repost@natgeo | A critically-endangered female northern white-cheeked gibbon named Polly at the @EndangeredPrimateRescueCenter in Cuc Phuong National Park, Vietnam. She was a youngster, and instead of sucking her thumb, she actually sucked on her big toe during our photoshoot. Because they are hunted for meat, used in traditional โ€œmedicinesโ€ and sold into the illegal pet trade, Northern white-cheeked gibbonsโ€™ main predators are humans. Their forest habitats in China, Vietnam and Laos are steadily being destroyed as logging continues, causing their populations to diminish along with it. In fact, there hasnโ€™t been a Northern white-cheeked gibbon sighting in China since the 1990s. The Endangered Primate Rescue Center is a not-for-profit project dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, breeding, research and conservation of Vietnam's endangered and critically endangered primate species. Their final aim is to reintroduce and release these animals as stable family groups into well-protected natural areas. Image by @JoelSartore | This week I had the chance to speak with @NPR Fresh Airโ€™s Terry Gross about the Photo Ark and what it takes to build it. We discussed this image of a 24-day-old Bengal slow loris, named โ€˜Captain Hookโ€™ because he is missing a hand, taken at the Endangered Primate Rescue Center in Vietnam. This species, and more than 400 others, can be found in my new book โ€œPhoto Arkโ€ available for pre-order now! Check out the radio interview to learn more about this loris, the behind the scenes work it takes to photograph animals for the Ark, and my journey as a National Geographic photographer. #repost@joelsartore (@get_repost) ใƒปใƒปใƒป The okapi was discovered by western scientists in 1901. As the national animal of the Democratic Republic of Congo, it has been protected since 1933. #repost@natgeo . . Video by @joelsartore at Parc Assango, managed by ONG Animal's World in Gabon. African golden cats are forest-dependent creatures living in equatorial Africa, a part of the world that is being ravaged by deforestation. As their habitat is lost, mainly to palm oil plantations, African golden cat populations are steadily disappearing. Theyโ€™re now listed as vulnerable on the #iucnRedlist. By avoiding the purchase of products that contain palm oil, we can make a statement that we will not tolerate the excessive destruction of this animalโ€™s habitat. This seven-year-old male African golden cat named Tigri is the only one of his species currently kept anywhere in human care. His intense stare made him among the most memorable creatures weโ€™ve brought on board the ark. Tigri now he stands as an ambassador for his entire species and will help us spread the word about the importance of its conservation. . Flat-headed cats have evolved to be exceptional fishers. Their partially webbed toes are perfect for navigating through water and their backward facing teeth make catching slippery prey much easier. Theyโ€™ve been known to collect fish from rivers and carry them far away from the shore so they canโ€™t escape back into the water. This cat is very rarely seen in the wild, so thereโ€™s still a lot to be learned about its behavior. They are reported to be solitary creatures and have been heard making vocalizations similar to those of a domestic cat, like meowing and purring. The flat-headed cat is endangered, with only 2,500 individuals left in the wild. Theyโ€™re threatened by wetland and forest degradation due to human settlement, development of palm oil plantations and excessive hunting and fishing. Only a handful of these cats are currently under human care, and just three litters have been reported in captivity. Video shot at zootaiping in Malaysia. . A gelada baboon named Dominick and his sons (swipe to see) at @ParcoNaturaViva in Italy. In 2008, Dominick was incorporated into a critical breeding program in Europe that helps guarantee the genetic diversity of gelada baboons. There, he found a new family, or harem, and had several offspring. In August 2016, Dominick arrived at Parco Natura Viva with five of his sons: Demay, Degust, Doctober, Dovem and Dember. All-male groups are important for this species. Usually, the other members of the group support the dominant male to find his harem. Dominick is an old male but he is still able to manage his group and be the leader! All of his sons are happy to follow and learn from him. The people at Parco Natura Viva are working hard to give these baboons a wonderful and enriching life. The opportunity to photograph this animal was made possible by @greenteenteam, an organization promoting youth involvement in nature and wildlife conservation. . . #gelada #baboons #primates #harem #wildlife #wildlifephotography #nature #naturephotography #monkey #monkeys #portrait #savetogether #photoark #natgeo
