An ode to a poet and a humanitarian, a romantic and an old soul, a dreamer and a lover, a tragic hero and a nation's beloved son, this is my ode to #Slovenia's #FrancePrešeren. ************************ Do you sing your toast with a sigh, Prešeren, as all the fools go by?
Dreaming of things that cannot ever bring
true joy to the heart nor the eyes.
When friendship between nations is lost
Who will bear the final cost
But those whose love we most prize
If your spirit is still strong, Prešeren
Then please breathe the lyrics of your song
Into the hearts and minds of each passerby.
Put fire into all the good hearts gathered
Across all time and space
For make no mistake about it,
It is, I am afraid, indeed a race.
~ t.m.u. ~ ************************ Today is Slovenia's Prešeren Day (or Culture Day), here is a little ode I wrote some time ago, inspired by his most well-known poem, The Toast ( #Zdravljica). France Prešeren, whose statue graces #PrešerenSquare in #Ljubljana, the capital city of Slovenia, is arguably their most famous and beloved #poet, he died on February 8th, 1849. Part of the Zdravljica (Zdrav-lyee-tsa), meaning a toast to your health, is also the text of Slovenia's #nationalanthem. I believe it to be one of the most benevolent national anthems in existence.
Now, more than ever, we would be wise to listen to these words and work on creating a world that works based on kindness and compassion for each other, regardless of where we are born or any of the other things about us that are really only packaging. It is what is inside that really counts.
Here are some of the #lyricsto Zdravljica (The Toast): "God's blessing on all nations,
Who long and work for that bright day,
When o'er earth's habitations
No war, no strife shall hold its sway;
Who long to see
That all men free
No more shall foes, but neighbours be.
At last to our reunion -
To us the toast! Let it resound,
Since in this gay communion
By thoughts of brotherhood we're bound.
May joyful cheer
From all good hearts now gathered here." May God's blessing truly be on all nations who long and work for a world of peace. 🙏
