The Mexican Cession To make matters worse for the Mexican Government Gold was discovered at Sutter’s Mill in California. The end of the Mexican War raised doubts about the morality of Manifest Destiny. Men like the Illinois congressman Abraham Lincoln raised criticism that saw the war as little better than a vehicle for the expansion of slavery. #historywithted  #history  #fastfact  #unitedstates  #unitedstateshistory  #americanhistory #youtuber #teachers  #knowledgeispower  #historybuff #mexicanwar #mexicancession #wisdomoftheday  #information #historynerd  #historygeek #historylover #historyclass #education #homeschool #school #teaching #socialstudies  #ushistory #teachersfollowteachers #teachersofinstagram

The treaty of Guadalupe- Hidalgo forced Mexico to cede two/fifths of her territory which included all of the current states of California, New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Nevada, Colorado and the Mexican government had to agree to recognize the Rio Grande River as the Texas border. In 1853 the Mexicans were forced to sell an additional strip of land along the Gila River the Gadsden Purchase. #historywithted  #history  #fastfact  #unitedstates  #unitedstateshistory  #americanhistory #youtuber #teachers  #knowledgeispower  #historybuff #treatyofguadalupehidalgo #wisdomoftheday  #information #historynerd  #historygeek #historylover #historyclass #education #homeschool #school #teaching #socialstudies  #ushistory #teachersfollowteachers #teachersofinstagram #mexicanwar #mexicancession

Scott entering Mexico City There were recurrences of that old militia Regular discord but the United States Army had performed far better than anyone expected. The Mexican war also provided a practical training ground for many officers that we will hear about later. The War ended officially with the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo in February of 1848. #historywithted  #history  #fastfact  #unitedstates  #unitedstateshistory  #americanhistory #youtuber #teachers  #knowledgeispower  #historybuff #mexicanwar #mexicocity #wisdomoftheday  #information #historynerd  #historygeek #historylover #historyclass #education #homeschool #school #teaching #socialstudies  #ushistory #teachersfollowteachers #teachersofinstagram #winfieldscott

The Battle of Chapultepec With the fall of Mexico City all government opposition to the United States receded. The Mexican war was a small scale affair compared to the later and earlier wars of the 19th century. The United States Army had swelled to about 115,000 and had suffered about 15,000 casualties throughout the war. #historywithted  #history  #fastfact  #unitedstates  #unitedstateshistory  #americanhistory #youtuber #teachers  #knowledgeispower  #historybuff #mexicanwar #wisdomoftheday  #information #captureofmexicocity #historynerd  #historygeek #historylover #historyclass #education #homeschool #school #teaching #socialstudies  #ushistory #teachersfollowteachers #teachersofinstagram #winfieldscott #losninosheros #battleofchapultepec

The Battle of Cerro Gordo Scott then began an in country March to Mexico City. Again emulating Hernan Cortez by using the same road the Conquistador had used and continuing to add an element of psychological terror to his opponents. Santa Ana hurriedly moved his army south after his defeat at Buena Vista to oppose Scott on his cross country move. At Cerro Gordo Santa Ana vainly tried to block Scott’s advancement but was outflanked and then overrun by Scott’s army. In fact Santa Ana was nearly killed by a brigade of Illinois volunteers. #historywithted  #history  #fastfact  #unitedstates  #unitedstateshistory  #americanhistory #youtuber #teachers  #knowledgeispower  #historybuff #battleofcerrogordo #wisdomoftheday  #information #historynerd  #historygeek #historylover #historyclass #education #homeschool #school #teaching #socialstudies  #ushistory #teachersfollowteachers #teachersofinstagram #mexicanwar #santaanna #winfieldscott

Gen. Winfield Scott Two weeks after Taylor’s victory at Buena Vista Winfield Scott a veteran of the War of 1812 landed at Vera Cruz with 14,000 troops. The landing at Vera Cruz was deeply symbolic. Hernan Cortez had landed at Vera Cruz before conquering Mexico in 1519. This successful invasion was the first time that The United States Army and Navy had worked together on a joint branch operation and a joint operation in foreign territory. To add to this accomplishment Scott’s Army was disembarked under the fire of Mexican coastal artillery before eventually forcing the defenders to surrender under a hail of fire by his own artillery. #historywithted  #history  #fastfact  #unitedstates  #unitedstateshistory  #americanhistory #youtuber #teachers  #knowledgeispower  #historybuff #winfieldscott #mexicanwar #wisdomoftheday  #information #historynerd  #historygeek #historylover #historyclass #education #homeschool #school #teaching #socialstudies  #ushistory #teachersfollowteachers #teachersofinstagram #battleofveracruz

Stephen Kearney Meanwhile Polk had order Colonel Stephen Kearney to march from Ft. Leavenworth into the province of New Mexico and capture Santa Fe. After the Capture of Santa Fe Kearney took 300 dragoons and went further west to rendezvous with Admiral Stockton at San Diego on the Pacific Coast. The Battle of Buena Vista In January 1847 he moved north to confront Zachary Taylor where he found him at Buena Vista on the 22nd of February 1847. The clash between the two armies should have been an easy victory for Santa Ana Taylor only had 4800 men under his command but wave after wave of Mexican attackers were broken by Taylor’s artillery. Santa Ana was eventually compelled to call for a retreat. #historywithted  #history  #fastfact  #unitedstates  #unitedstateshistory  #americanhistory #youtuber #teachers  #mexicanwar #knowledgeispower  #historybuff #battleofbuenavista #wisdomoftheday  #information #santaanna #historynerd  #historygeek #historylover #historyclass #education #homeschool #school #teaching #socialstudies  #ushistory #teachersfollowteachers #teachersofinstagram #zacharytaylor

Santa Ana criticized the stand the Mexican Army had made at Monterrey his efforts to relieve the garrison at Monterrey was fatally delayed by antagonistic opponents. His opponents lobbed accusations that Santa Ana was only looking for an opportunity to install himself as President again. Santa Ana had more than enough on his hands with contending with the United States Armies barreling down upon him. Using a lot of questionable and upright means he managed to raise a fighting force of 21,000 men to defend Northern Mexico and recapture Monterrey. #historywithted  #history  #fastfact  #unitedstates  #unitedstateshistory  #americanhistory #youtuber #teachers  #knowledgeispower  #historybuff #santaanna #mexicanwar #wisdomoftheday  #information #historynerd  #historygeek #historylover #historyclass #education #homeschool #school #teaching #socialstudies  #ushistory #teachersfollowteachers #teachersofinstagram

Antonio De Lopez De Santa Anna The loss of Monterrey sent Mexico City into a flurry of activity and Santa Ana with some assistance by the United States Navy was able to slip back into the country. Once back in the country Santa Ana dropped all attempts at aiding peace negotiations and offered his services to the new Mexican Government. Zachary Taylor was given command of one of the four principle field armies of the United States. Taylor aimed to capture the arid northern regions of Mexico he made Monterrey the capital of Nueva Leon his primary objective. By September 19th Taylor was zeroing in on Monterrey and for two days his Infantry battled away smashing through street barricades and his artillery fired round after round onto the city’s innermost defenses. The Mexican garrison eventually surrendered and evacuated Monterrey with their arms and possessions. That was the first great victory of the war. This was the first victory for the United States on foreign soil. #historywithted  #history  #fastfact  #unitedstates  #unitedstateshistory  #americanhistory #youtuber #teachers  #knowledgeispower  #historybuff #battleofmonterrey #wisdomoftheday  #information #historynerd  #historygeek #historylover #historyclass #education #homeschool #school #teaching #socialstudies  #ushistory #teachersfollowteachers #teachersofinstagram #mexicanwar #zacharytaylor

Mexico had a military academy at Chapultepec but a majority of the Mexican Army’s senior officers held their positions on the strength of social or political connections. The Mexican Army was still a formidable foe. They looked like the odds favorite. They were poorly fed, clothed and paid but tenacious in nature and did not lack for bravery. #historywithted  #history  #fastfact  #unitedstates  #unitedstateshistory  #americanhistory #youtuber #teachers  #knowledgeispower  #historybuff #mexicanarmy #mexicanwar #wisdomoftheday  #information #historynerd  #historygeek #historylover #historyclass #education #homeschool #school #teaching #socialstudies  #ushistory #teachersfollowteachers #teachersofinstagram

The Mexican Army by contrast was four times as large as the regular United States Army, it had been in and out of combat at regular intervals in the 19th century. This surface professionalism concealed the reality that Mexico had no weapon producing factories, few facilities capable of clothing her troops who were all conscripted in to service. #historywithted  #history  #fastfact  #unitedstates  #unitedstateshistory  #americanhistory #youtuber #teachers  #knowledgeispower  #historybuff #mexicanarmy #mexicanwar #wisdomoftheday  #information #historynerd  #historygeek #historylover #historyclass #education #homeschool #school #teaching #socialstudies  #ushistory #teachersfollowteachers #teachersofinstagram

Polk undaunted made plans to add more muscle to the army by adding 50,000 men. He did this by accepting regiments of state volunteers who would be issued uniforms and equipment by their respective states and only issued weapons by the federal government. This plan created a very unsightly fighting force for the United States. There would be disciplined regular army regiments under professional officers who were easily identifiable in there dark blue jackets and light blue trouser. Then there would be the state volunteers led by would be politicians and clad in anything they could muster. #historywithted  #history  #fastfact  #unitedstates  #unitedstateshistory  #americanhistory #youtuber #teachers  #knowledgeispower  #historybuff #usarmy #mexicanwar #wisdomoftheday  #information #historynerd  #historygeek #historylover #historyclass #education #homeschool #school #teaching #socialstudies  #ushistory #teachersfollowteachers #teachersofinstagram

The United States Army in 1846 was only 6500 strong comprised of 16 regiments. The army’s training and doctrine was largely unchanged from the Revolutionary War and War of 1812. Some units were even equipped with outdated muskets. The army’s regiments were still organized along 18th century British lines with a regiment having 10 companies and two of those companies being Light Infantry Skirmishers and Grenadiers. Half the army was comprised of immigrants, the majority of senior officers had been commissioned before the war of 1812. Those same officers had never maneuvered a body of troops larger than a few companies. #historywithted  #history  #fastfact  #unitedstates  #unitedstateshistory  #americanhistory #youtuber #teachers  #knowledgeispower  #historybuff #usarmy #mexicanwar #wisdomoftheday  #information #historynerd  #historygeek #historylover #historyclass #education #homeschool #school #teaching #socialstudies  #ushistory #teachersfollowteachers #teachersofinstagram

Taylor went on the attack and drove the Mexican Army from their position in Panic. That same day Taylor’s dispatches from April 24th reporting the ambush reached Washington and on May 10th Polk drafted a Message to Congress asking for a declaration of War on the grounds that American blood had been spilt on American soil. In February of 1846 Taylor was ordered to take his men down to the Rio Grande and establish his headquarters at Matamoros to establish the United States claim that the Rio Grande was the Texas-Mexico border. On March 8th Taylor sent his advance element chiefly dragoons and artillery on his march Taylor encountered units of Mexican scouts. Major General Zachary Taylor The Texas border dispute was contended by both Mexico and Texas. The Mexicans insisted that the southern boundary of the Texas Province was the Nuestras River at Corpus Christi, the Texans insisted that the southern boundary of Texas was the Rio Grande River 150 miles further south. General Taylor avoided inflaming tensions by setting up camp along the Nuestras and drilling his undisciplined forces of cavalry and Infantrymen. #historywithted  #history  #fastfact  #unitedstates  #unitedstateshistory  #americanhistory #youtuber #teachers  #mexico #knowledgeispower  #historybuff #zacharytaylor #texas #wisdomoftheday  #information #historynerd  #historygeek #historylover #historyclass #education #homeschool #school #teaching #socialstudies  #ushistory #teachersfollowteachers #teachersofinstagram #mexicanhistory

Jose Joaquin de Herrera The President of the Mexican Republic General Jose Joaquin de Herrera saw no interests in accepting the overtures made by Polk but Herrera was also aware that anything that looked like capitulation would ignite an uprising in Mexico. There were no illusions about Polk’s plans after he was elected, the Mexican Envoy wrote to John C. Calhoun who was serving as Secretary of State warning him that Texas was still regarded by Mexico as a Mexican province. That 11 years of Texan Independence only amounted to Texas being in a state of prolonged rebellion. That if the United States annexed Texas it would the most unjust action in the annals of history. Polk had mistaken and really did not care about the depths of Mexican anger over Texas. The United States consul at Tampico warned that the entire Mexican populace had come to harbor the most malignant feelings towards the United States. #historywithted  #history  #fastfact  #unitedstates  #unitedstateshistory  #americanhistory #youtuber #teachers  #knowledgeispower  #historybuff #jamespolk #texas #wisdomoftheday  #information #historynerd  #historygeek #historylover #historyclass #education #homeschool #school #teaching #socialstudies  #ushistory #teachersfollowteachers #teachersofinstagram

Clay’s endorsement of annexation back fired and cost him the election. A letter he wrote to an Alabama newspaper editor in favor of annexation cost him the support of Northern Whigs who feared the international ramifications of annexation and the domestic ramifications of acquiring a large territory to further spread slavery. In the same letter Clay also backed away from the issue saying he would not jeopardize the union for Texas costing him support among pro annexation Whigs. Clay lost the election by a thin margin in the popular vote less than 40,000. Not so bad but taken with the fact that Polk a relatively unknown figure on the national political scene defeated him, that Clay was unable to simply overwhelm him did not bode well for clay’s futures prospects. The defeat cast a spell over the Whig party disheartened they offered little resistance to the Texas annexation treaty in 1845 three days before Polk was inaugurated as the 11th president of the United States.   #historywithted  #history  #fastfact  #unitedstates  #unitedstateshistory  #americanhistory #youtuber #teachers  #knowledgeispower  #historybuff #jamespolk #henryclay #wisdomoftheday  #information #historynerd  #historygeek #historylover #historyclass #education #homeschool #school #teaching #socialstudies  #ushistory #teachersfollowteachers #teachersofinstagram

It was his ultimate good fortune that he lost his reelection campaigns. Going into the Election of 1844 the Democratic Party faced the problem of not having a sound candidate to run for the presidency. Martin Van Buren who had lost to William Henry Harrison wanted another shot but no senior party official would back the man whose name was synonymous with economic collapse. The Whigs for their part had rallied behind Henry Clay was still itching to be elected president. Clay in his fervor began to cautiously endorse Texas annexation. Polk was selected as the longshot by the Democratic Party. He did not have a national profile but did have the right ideological credentials. He was a firm Jacksonian, a southerner, a slave owner and outright annexationist. Polk even dared to dream of being able to edge the British out of the Oregon Country on the Pacific Coast. #historywithted  #history  #fastfact  #unitedstates  #unitedstateshistory  #americanhistory #youtuber #teachers  #knowledgeispower  #historybuff #wisdomoftheday  #information #jamespolk #henryclay #historynerd  #historygeek #historylover #historyclass #education #homeschool #school #teaching #socialstudies  #ushistory #teachersfollowteachers #teachersofinstagram

President James K. Polk James Polk was born to Scots-Irish parents in the Carolina backwoods, moved to the Tennessee frontier during Jefferson’s great western push, read law and entered state politics. He early on became a member of Andrew Jackson’s political circle. Polk won a seat in House of Representatives in 1824 and became a noted opponent to the Adams Administration. Polk even served as the Jackson’s point man in the House during the Bank War. After Andrew Jackson’s retirement Polk appeared to be finished as a national political figure. He campaigned and won the Governorship of Tennessee in 1839 but lost two successive reelection attempts in 1841 and 1843. It was his ultimate good fortune that he lost his reelection campaigns. #historywithted  #history  #fastfact  #unitedstates  #unitedstateshistory  #americanhistory #youtuber #teachers  #knowledgeispower  #historybuff #jamespolk #wisdomoftheday  #information #historynerd  #historygeek #historylover #historyclass #education #homeschool #school #teaching #socialstudies  #ushistory #teachersfollowteachers #teachersofinstagram

Expansion across the west created friction with Great Britain the boundaries in the west had not been resolved since the purchase was made in 1803. The ownership of the Oregon Country was a major international dispute between the United States and Great Britain at this time. Manifest Destiny also encouraged other freebooters from the United States to immigrate to other fragile republics in central and South America to imitate the example of the Texans. That is destabilize the local governments seizing power and then offering themselves up to the United States as a new possessions. The Democratic Party’s nominee for the election of 1844 James K. The self-interested part was based on southern desires. As anxious slave owners looked to Westward expansion to relieve the burden of the Missouri Compromise. Northerners also looked West to the prospect of cheap land and brave living West of the Mississippi and Louisiana Purchase country. The romantic part was fed by the paintings of American artists that presented images of the west as a vacant land of milk and honey with a few Noble savages and mountain men like Kit Carson, Jedidiah Smith and William H Ashley who braved nature and the elements like the first Colonists and pioneers. #historywithted  #history  #fastfact  #unitedstates  #unitedstateshistory  #americanhistory #youtuber #teachers  #knowledgeispower  #historybuff #manifestdestiny #wisdomoftheday  #information #historynerd  #historygeek #historylover #historyclass #education #homeschool #school #teaching #socialstudies  #ushistory #teachersfollowteachers #teachersofinstagram #westernexpansion

It should have been easy for him to do it was already clear to his contemporaries that the United States had a destiny to rule the lands between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The expedient resolution of the Missouri question, the captivating victory of the Texas immigrants and the ease with which the Republic had assimilated the wilderness of the old North West territory into civilized polities gave rise to the notion that the United States had a Manifest Destiny to prosper unabated. Manifest in this sense means obvious or self-evident. This notion however was part self-interest and partly romantic. #historywithted  #history  #fastfact  #unitedstates  #unitedstateshistory  #americanhistory #youtuber #teachers  #knowledgeispower  #historybuff #johntyler #manifestdestiny #wisdomoftheday  #information #historynerd  #historygeek #historylover #historyclass #education #homeschool #school #teaching #socialstudies  #ushistory #teachersfollowteachers #teachersofinstagram #westernexpansion

President John Tyler Tyler soon came to loggerheads with Clay, Webster and all the other Whig leaders because Tyler opposed every bill for internal Improvements, resurrecting the national Bank and protective tariffs that was sent to him. Eventually Tyler's cabinet resigned and he attempted to form his own independent political power base among his fellow Southerners and slave owners. He tried to turn Texas annexation into a campaign issue that he could ride back into the Whitehouse in 1844. #historywithted  #history  #fastfact  #unitedstates  #unitedstateshistory  #americanhistory #youtuber #teachers  #knowledgeispower  #historybuff #texas #johntyler #wisdomoftheday  #information #historynerd  #historygeek #historylover #historyclass #education #homeschool #school #teaching #socialstudies  #ushistory #teachersfollowteachers #teachersofinstagram #westernexpansion

The Surrender of Santa Anna Harrison was a Whig and the Whigs were interested in developing the internal economy of the republic rather than picking up the bill for expansionist adventurers across the Mississippi. So Texas remained an unwilling Independent Republic. Unfortunately William Henry Harrison died one month into his presidency and the Whigs found themselves saddled with Harrison’s vice-president John Tyler. #historywithted  #history  #fastfact  #unitedstates  #unitedstateshistory  #americanhistory #youtuber #teachers  #knowledgeispower  #historybuff #williamhenryharrison #whigs #wisdomoftheday  #information #historynerd  #historygeek #historylover #historyclass #education #homeschool #school #teaching #socialstudies  #ushistory #teachersfollowteachers #teachersofinstagram #westernexpansion
